A Letter

DDD,

The official letter from your elementary school arrived this afternoon. Yes, finally. You start kindergarten in two weeks. We have the supplies list for your grade and it isn’t long. Just a few things and you will be set to start the next chapter of your life.

You are a big boy now. You entered boyhood when you turned five this year but this school business officially makes you one. It’s scary yet exciting. Too many things are happening at the same time. Too many to keep track of. Just in the last few weeks, you have changed in so many wonderful, remarkable ways. You are more mature, confident and surer. You are taller, outgrowing your clothes and shoes way too quickly for our liking. You are more energetic, agile and active. You mastered your bike as well as your scooter and if you had your way, you would probably ride them 24/7. It is simply commendable how quickly, after a few tries, you overcame your fear and skillfully rode them. You can easily count and write up to 100 now, tackle simple additions and substractions. You enjoy writing alphabets and it is wonderful to hear you read. As much as you whine about activity time, once you start, you completely immerse yourself into it.

We know you are looking forward to starting BIG school and as your parents, we couldn't be prouder. It is a bittersweet transition for us but please know that we will be behind you every step of the way. You will win friends and teachers over with your gentleness, compassion and selflessness. Put your good listening skills to use just like you did in your pre-K. Get yourself out there. Use your imagination, your creativity, ask questions, play nice, be kind to your friends and respect your teachers. This new phase comes with a lot of promise and optimism. Wallow in it, learn, read, play, draw but most importantly, remember to have FUN along the way.

We are confident you will shine and succeed. We are certain you will give it your best shot. We are proud you are our son.

Love,
Mama and Papa.
