Bloody Nose

He is snotty, congested, bloodied, clogged up, red-eyed – the symptoms seem endless, never ending. Yes, that’s my poor boy. It started with allergies, moved on to fever, then sore throat and now its bloody nose and congestion. It's been a rough week for him.

I just picked him up from school. His teacher called me half hour ago to inform me that he sneezed so hard that blood from the clot in his tiny nose splattered all across the carpet, onto his friends clothes and skin. All three of them had to be washed up, the carpet removed and disinfected. His teacher politely but firmly told me that D needs to be taken home and ‘contained’, as quickly as possible.

Of course, he couldn’t be happier. When I picked him up, he was his smiling self, excited to be leaving early from school on a Friday but at the same time concerned that this incident warrants a visit to the doctor’s.

Mama, do I need to go see a doctor? He asked as I helped him with his jacket.

Upon hearing a negative response, he happily bade bye to his fellow mates and teachers, ran to the car, strapped himself in his seat, ready to enjoy the rest of his day with his sister and grandparents.

Life for him goes on.

Bloody noses are common in our household. Both kids get them, D more so than A. We have consulted his doc many a times about it but every time we get the same, standard response- oh, don’t worry, most kids bleed at this age. Hence, we are left with no options but to pinch the bridge of his nose, hold a tissue to it and wait for the bleeding to stop. As much as I am used to this, it is heart wrenching to see him bleed. While he handles it like a trooper, my heart bleeds watching him go through it.

We take it one step at a time, hoping that there will come a time when these darn bleeding episodes will stop. Once and for all.

Until then, life goes on for us too.

I used to have these bleeding episodes when I was a child too. Cow dung somehow figured as one of the remedies. If that is not an option, the other thing was to lay a napkin soaked in very cold water over my forehead as I lay on my back with my head slightly below my shoulders. It definitely seemed to help bring down the bleeding. And the bleeding episodes also stopped by about 4th grade.

Hope it gets better for your son soon.
