A timeless moment.....

Aamare moina xuboye
Baarite bogori ruboye….

This is probably one of the most popular Assamese lullabies I have known growing up. My mother used to constantly sing it to me and my siblings when we were young. It is one of those ‘evergreen’ songs that will never lose its charm and beauty.

I remember vividly falling asleep in the warmth of my mother’s embrace, her sweet voice faintly ringing in my ears. Or she singing it and patting me gently while I drift into deep slumber.

Fast forward 30 years and I am doing exactly the same with my two little ones. Especially with D. And he simply adores this song.
Every night as I tuck him into bed, I am asked to do two things. Tell a story and sing ‘the’ lullaby. And the lullaby has to be sung not once but at least a few times while patting him. If by any chance, the patting stops, he diligently reminds me, "Mama, pat me!!"

This morning, as I was in the bathroom getting ready for work, D was just playing with one of his toys in our bedroom. Then suddenly, I heard him sing it…

Aamare D..... xuboye
Baarite bogori ruboye….

Of course, he couldn't get most of the words and he made up his own while singing it but it was the cutest thing I have ever heard. He didn’t notice me watching him and was completely oblivious of my presence. It was absolutely adorable as he was completely into the song and was really trying his best to sing it correctly. But of course, as soon as he noticed me, he became self-conscious and bashfully ran out of the room.

I was kicking myself for not having the video camera or camera handy since it was a moment worth capturing. A moment of utmost innocence and precious simplicity!
